Language of the Flower
My newest piece, called "Language of the Flowers" is about the unspoken language I have with the flowers in my garden. They communicate through the soft shadows, beautiful colors and textures within their leaves and blooms. They grow and mingle with the plants around them to create a beautiful medley of natural beauty. It is a place I visit daily and often for solitude and rejuvination.
.

At first glance it’s a rose; up close it’s a loose, layered field of marks and soft color made it during my morning meditative drawing practice — no plan, just making marks, adding texture and shading, and seeing what showed up as I worked.

The marks started to tell a story when I stepped back, so I added words around the petals. Those handwritten fragments became the rose’s voice — the literal language of the flower.
"Language of the Flower" is 11 x 14 inches, mixed media on watercolor paper: charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, and ink. It is built from layers of washes and stencils, loose graphite and pen, and overwritten with lines to get texture and depth.

The palette is calm with small pops of orange and pink for warmth. It’s quiet, peaceful work — a little conversation between the marks and me.

If you’re curious, try a meditative drawing of your own—no plan, no pressure. Sit quietly, make simple marks, and notice what surfaces when you step back. You might be surprised at the stories your marks want to tell. I have grown to rely on this practice as a morning ritual and it is my favorite way to start the day.
